Talkback, Sharing Kakuma with Houston

Hello! I'm thrilled to say that my talkback at the Landing Theatre in Houston was such a joy. Thank you to Troy Scheid and David Rainey for the opportunity to share my photographs and students stories. My exhibition will be on display at the theatre through May 13th.

Last night's talkback leader, Rebecca J. Hopp, was discussing her experience as an arts educator in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. (She has an exhibit of her photos and her students' photos in the Landing lobby.) As it turned out, one of last night's audience members, Mr. Ishmael, had lived in Kakuma camp for 6 years. This is the moment when they connected.

Please go and see the play In Darfur through May 13th. I promise your emotions will be pulled in many directions and your heart will grow bigger in search of ways to help refugees in your community and world. Well done cast, directors, and crew. There are many more friends giving powerful refugee related talkbacks after the performances.

The most amazing part of giving this talkback was meeting Mr. Ismael. He is from Sudan and lived in Kakuma for 6 years before being resettled in Houston. It was such an honor to have him in the audience and to connect with him. After the talk we walked through my photo exhibition at the Theatre and shared stories of Kakuma. I'm blessed to have met him and can't wait to learn more about his life. Visit my Facebook page here to see Ismael's greeting to those in Kakuma.

Thank you to my hubby, Tom for holding his cell for for 20 mins to video the talk! :)
